RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2006

We are thrilled to have won our first Gold Medal at Chelsea this year. Two other carnivorous plant exhibitors based in UK have won many Chelsea Golds with fabulous displays of mainly Sarracenia, but we believe it's unique using bare-rooted plants carried half way around the world as check in baggage and it has never been done before with a display of Nepenthes. The display took 9 days to set up. A lot more thought went into the artistic layout this time around. Diana spent months with papier-mâché and wire models, in order to work out what goes where, so we knew exactly how each plant should be placed as they came out of the boxes. To see photos, please go to the to the gallery of photos of the exhibit here.

Borneo Exotics awarded the Silver-Gilt medal for the outstanding display of Nepenthes at the Chelsea Flower Show 2005.

We’re back from our first Chelsea proudly clutching our medal. It wasn’t Gold this time unfortunately but Silver Gilt which is next best. The best news is that the judges had no criticisms of the Nepenthes, the problem as they saw it apparently lay with the backing plants and aspects of the general layout which we can try to improve upon next time around.

Still, a Chelsea Medal is a Chelsea Medal and 6 minutes of prime-time coverage on the BBC was wonderful!

Many thanks to all who helped us, starting with Alistair and Jenny Pearce of South West Carnivorous Plants who gave up their place at this years Chelsea Flower Show to help us stage the exhibit. Also a big thank you to staff of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and volunteers from the British Carnivorous Plant Society who helped us stand there and educate the public about Nepenthes for 13 hours per day! Last but not least, our indefatigable staff who spent very many hours carefully packing the plants which all survived the journey, and Sri Lankan Airlines who turned a blind eye to the fact that our check in baggage totalled 60 large boxes and occupied 4.5 cubic metres!

Next year? We’ll be there again if the RHS decide to invite us back.

Watch this space.

New DVD on Borneo Exotics courtesy of Irmgard & Siegfried Hartmeyer from ?Hunting Veggies'.

In December 2004, we hosted two well known carnivorous plant enthusiasts, Irmgard & Siegfried Hartmeyer, who made a very interesting documentary on Borneo Exotics, here at our facilities.

We've just been informed that they have finished editing the DVD, spending more than 250 hours on it and that it will be ready for sale by end April. This is really good news for us, as this DVD will help promote greater awareness about Nepenthes. Siggy, along with his wife Irmgard, have produced many documentaries such as ?A Hunting Veggies Cocktail' and also the video on the International Carnivorous Plant Conference, held in Tokyo a few years back.

We have just seen a pre-release version of the DVD and must say it looks good! We are happy and pleased that we could be a part of the latest project of Hunting Veggies.

For more information about this DVD and how to purchase it, please visit the official website of Hunting Veggies at: www.hartmeyer.de/homepageGB.htm.

New Unexpected Award from the RHS!

We've just received a letter from Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) informing us that they have decided to present us with a special annual award ?Best Exhibitor New to the London Flower Shows', for our display of Nepenthes at the Great Autumn Show in London, in September 2004 (see earlier feature with photos and RHS web page at www.rhs.org.uk/events/londonshows/londonseptember2004.asp).We are both amazed and thrilled to be awarded something so prestigious at our first attempt at any flower show. A lot of hard work has paid off and we thank Alistair and Jenny Pearce of South West Carnivorous Plants , without whose help it just wouldn't have been possible to create such an exhibit.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Lawrence Hall, Westminster , London , on 15 th March at 10.30 am. Rob or Diana or both will be in attendance, so if anyone would like to have a beer or two with us afterwards we'd be pleased to see them!

Chelsea Flower Show 2005

We're delighted to be informed by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) that our entry has been accepted to the 2005 Chelsea Flower Show in London England to be held between ?. and ? of May 2005. Chelsea is probably the most prestigious flower show in the world and certainly one of the largest, attracting around 500,000 visitors over 6 days. We are very lucky to have been accepted into Chelsea upon our first application, especially as we have only ever entered an RHS show on one occasion, which was the Great Autumn Show in London in September 2004 (see earlier feature with photos and RHS web page at www.rhs.org.uk/events/londonshows/londonseptember2004.asp ). Guess we must have made an impression on the judges!

We hope to see some of you there! You can see more details about the Chelsea Flower Show on their website at www.rhs.org.uk/events/chelsea2005.asp .

Stop Press!!

We’ve just been informed by the RHS that our display at the Great Autumn Show has been nominated for consideration for three additional annual awards, namely:

• The RHS Award for best new exhibitor to the London Flower Shows.

• The Williams Memorial Medal for a group of plants of one genus which show excellence in cultivation, staged at one of the Society's Shows during the year

• The Anthony Huxley Trophy awarded to the best group exhibit of plants normally grown for decorative effect in a protected environment at a show judged by Floral C Committee during the year.

The annual awards are announced in the New Year. Of course we may not win any of them but it’s nice to know we’ve been nominated anyway!

US Representative.

As of Dec 12th 2003, John de Kanel no longer represents Borneo Exotics (Pvt) Ltd. This will actually have little effect on most of our U.S. customers since John’s primary function as U.S. Representative was to sort out problems with importation and liaise with the customer to arrange replacement of plants that arrive in damaged or otherwise unsatisfactory condition. Several years of experience and hundreds of shipments later we have hardly ever had a shipment seriously delayed for any reason and have had to replace very few damaged plants in that time.

Another function of our US Representative was to assist with billing of US customers, since being based in Sri Lanka we found it difficult to obtain an internet gateway for credit card billing at reasonable cost. That problem is about to be solved and we will soon be able to bill credit cards. In fact, we have discovered that we can even process checks drawn on US bank accounts that are sent to us in the mail.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank John for his years of assistance and wish him well with his other business ventures.
