Theme of the Exhibit An exhibition of Nepenthes in a natural forest setting. This year's display particularly features the latest artificially propagated hybrids, which are both vigorous, varied and all created in our nurseries over many years. Some of the plants on display for the first time this year are destined for large-scale production. The plants are all bare-rooted and flown out for the exhibit from our nurseries in Sri Lanka. Many of the species are extremely rare and some are now believed extinct in habitat. All plants have been grown from legally obtained seeds and grown in a peat-free media.
Photo Calls Bill Bailey - 10.30 am
We're delighted that once again Bill Bailey will be able to join us at 10.30am on Press Day. Bill will be talking about the plant that was named for him last year, Nepenthes 'Bill Bailey'. This is a selected cultivar of a hybrid we created: Nepenthes singalana x ventricosa. The female parent, Nepenthes singalana, is a Sumatran species which inhabits the same forests as the Orangutan and along with countless other animals and plants, suffers from the same environmental pressures as that flagship species, due to degradation of habitat as a result of human activities. Bill is an active patron of SOS (Save the Orangutan) as well as IAR (International Animal Rescue). We shall be selling a limited number of young plants of Nepenthes 'Bill Bailey' for the first time from our stand this year, in specially developed easy-to-keep self-watering domes suitable for desktops, windowsills etc. 20% of proceeds from these sales will be split between the SOS and IAR. Nepenthes 'Bill Bailey' will be entering the mass market arena in 2012 and we intend to ensure that a significant percentage of proceeds of future sales shalll be donated to the charities of Bill's choosing. There are several online agencies offering photos of Bill with his plant at the launch at Chelsea 2010.
Dame Helen Mirren - 11.15 am
Photo copyrighted and may not be used without permission. Credited to Gyles Keyte. We are honoured that Dame Helen Mirren is finding time out of her very busy schedule to attend a photocall for the launch of the new cultivar Nepenthes 'Helen'. Please go to the linked page for full details.
New Cultivars and a New Hybrid We are launching three new cultivars this year, of selected primary hybrids, all of which are new to horticulture. In every case, these plants have been raised from seeds made by crossing parent plants which we also raised from legally obtained seeds, a process that has taken more than 15 years. We are also launching a new primary hybrid from which we have yet to select the best cultivar. Please click on the links below to be taken to a page for each, with full details and photos which may be used freely unless otherwise stated. Nepenthes 'Helen' - named for Dame Helen Mirren, this is a specific new cultivar of a primary hybrid, Nepenthes spathulata x spectabilis which was a top 20 finalist in the 2010 RHS Plant of the Year Competition. Nepenthes 'Princess'- a specific cultivar of a new primary hybrid, which is being entered into the 2011 RHS Plant of the Year Competition. Nepenthes 'Polar Prince' - a specific cultivar of a new primary hybrid, which is also being entered into the 2011 RHS Plant of the Year Competition. Nepenthes spathulata x gymnamphora - a new primary hybrid, which is also being entered into the 2011 RHS Plant of the Year Competition. There is no cultivar name yet as we have not yet identified the best cultivar.
New Product Innovation - the Biodome We are unveiling a brand new product for the first time at Chelsea. It's a self-watering unit that will enable anyone to grow Nepenthes at home with ease. You can see this at our exhibit. 20% of proceeds from sales are being donated to charities chosen by Dame Helen and Bill Bailey.
